IRISH MONASTICISM Origins and Early Development by John Ryan, S.J.

Republished by Four Courts Press, Dublin 1992. Pbk 492 pages. ISBN 1 85182 111 2 First published in 1931, second edition in 1972, this book remains a standard text. This book aims to examine the position of Irish monasticism in relation to that found in Europe and the Orient from the fifth to the seventh century A.D. Father Ryan discusses the ideal of Christian monasticism in general, the introduction and early development of the ideal in Ireland up to A.D. 660, and concludes by discussing the differences found in the Irish spirit in relation to the Benedictine Observance which was popular in Europe at that time. Monasticism was an integral part of the Irish social system then, and this book shows something of the economic and cultural development of the country and demonstrates how totally different it was to anything to be found in the rest of Europe.
